5 Things Every Writer Should Know

Hey everyone! It's another week and today I'm gonna be talking about ways in which you can use to improve as a writer. Whether you're a blogger, book author, or copywriter, these 5 tips are definitely worth learning. Now without further ado, let's dive in.

So what is creative writing?

Creative writing is a powerful tool in telling a story. It also helps your social and individual growth. Also it's one of the most important skills you can ever learn.

It stretches your imagination and offers a wonderful outlook for self expression.

In other words, creative writing is every form of a narrative writing. From poetry, newspaper articles and novels. As long as it is not academic or technical.

A lot of people also see creative writing as some sort of art. The art of making things up. Writing down things in a way that it's neither technical or academic, but still attracts an audience.

To put all these into one sentence, creative writing is simply any form of writing that is original and self-expressive.

So, if you're just getting into the writing business or you're aspiring to become a copywriter, own a blog or write a book, I've got 5 tips for you that you need to know in other to become a fantastic writer.

1- Desire

Without desire, you're not gonna get anywhere writing. Without the desire to become a copywriter, author, blogger, you're honestly not going to be one.

You need to make it your number one ambition. Desire it. Want it. Because the skill isn't just gonna come to you and say “Hey, you thought of me, here I am.

It's not gonna work out that way. Creative writing is unlike academic writing. You know academic writing is designed to educate, that's why they can be very boring. They're kind of dry and textbook like. So the first thing you want to cross check is your desire!

2- Get Used To Shorter Paragraphs First

There are so many types of creative writing. Long form writing can be like 2,000-4,000 words. But it takes years to hone your craft and write long form articles. I always tell people to start little. Start with shorter articles before moving on to longer ones.

This sometimes helps build up your confidence as well. Because sometimes when you write a long article or copy, like 5-10 pages, it can be very intimidating. It might even take you 3-5 days to bring up something really good.

But if you craft something short, like 700-1,000 words, it might just take you about 30 minutes or an hour, if you're good.

3- 80% Research - 20% Writing

This is a very important part of any kind of writing. Spend 80% of your time doing research and only 20% of your time writing. This is one of the many mistakes I see a lot writers make. They get all excited and they can't wait to just get their laptops and start writing.

You don't wanna do that. You need to spend a majority of your time researching your topic. That way you're much more easier to write something that speaks directly to your readers or clients. Other than rushing into it and just writing without facts.

4- Write The Way You Talk

When it comes to Book writing, Copywriting and Article writing, it's about communicating. Book writers have to communicate with their readers.

Copywriters have to communicate with their customers. Article writers have to communicate with their subscribers. Write in a very simple language. Write the way you talk.

You want your prospects when they are reading your writing, they can almost hear you talking to them. Rather than having people read something that doesn't sound anything like you.

They'll be confused. It'll be difficult for them to understand. If your writing doesn't communicate well, people are gonna stop reading.

For academic writers, they try to make themselves sound smart, but you don't wanna do that. Let your readers see your flaws keep on reading.

When you're writing, think of it like writing to a particular person, instead of to a group of people. Instead of using lots of “WE" or “OUR", use lots of “YOU" and “I".

It'll be like you sitting across a table and communicating with one person. So write the way you talk. The more personal your writing appears, the more powerful it is.

5- Study Successful Writers

This is very important, seriously. Study other successful writers in the writing field, if possible, get a mentor to show you the ups and downs about the whole thing. A physical practice is 100 times better than an online practice. So study other writers and their work.

Some articles have been around like 10-20 years, so read them, go back to the last 5-10 years, that's one of the ways to develop new ideas.

What are some of those articles that have been well read over the years, find them, look at all of it, then come up with something that is similar.

You can also change the topic a little bit. It's not always about creativity for the sake of creativity. Don't be like “Oh I wanna come up with something that no one has ever come up with.

That's just stupid, you don't wanna do that. Because there is absolutely nothing you want to write about that isn't already out there.

  1. This is interesting. I have always wanted to be able to have a way with words. Not be a writer but be able to easily express my self freely and effortlessly.

    1. The world today, if you cannot communicate well through writing, you're at a monstrous disadvantage. Just as you mentioned, it provides better self expression and lots more.
